What is Vinyasa Flow Yoga?

Vinyasa is a style of yoga where the postures are strung together in sequences or flows.  Vinyasa yoga is a creative form of yoga where no two classes are ever the same.  What happens in class can also vary greatly between teachers and so it is good to find a teacher who teaches in a way that you like.

Vinyasa Flow classes can be quite fast-paced and the focus is always on connecting the movements with the breath.  Poses do not tend to be held for more than about five breaths, but again that depends on the teacher.

A vinyasa class tends to be a whole body work out, but there will be a “peak posture” that you will work towards throughout the class, warming and opening the body with the intention of expressing the peak posture to the best of your ability.

The almost constant movement and rhythmic breath in a vinyasa class is sometimes called a moving meditation.  Since the class moves at a pace, the focus required can take you out of your head and into your body, thereby calming the nervous system and helping to relieve stress or anxiety.

At Great Malvern Yoga we offer a variety of vinyasa flow classes with different teachers.  All of our classes can be adapted for different abilities and there is never any obligation to try to do every single posture.
